Ransomware data recovery in Brazil

AS recovers data for companies in Brazil after ransomware — encrypted ERP databases, file servers, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines and Veeam backups, in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and across the country. The work is done remotely from our lab in India and starts with measuring how your files were actually encrypted.

Ransomware in Brazil: what gets hit

Distributors, manufacturers, agribusiness companies, clinics and accounting firms in Brazil typically keep their ERP database, fiscal files and shared folders on a few virtualised Windows servers, with a Veeam or NAS backup in the same network. Ransomware groups active in Brazil go for the hypervisor and the backups first, so the ERP database, the virtual disks and the backup files are encrypted together. Those are large files, and large files are usually encrypted only in parts.

Systems we often recover from Brazil

Brazilian companies often run TOTVS Protheus, SAP Business One or other local ERPs on SQL Server or Oracle, with NF-e electronic invoice XML files and SPED tax files stored alongside, on VMware or Hyper-V servers backed up with Veeam. ERP databases and virtual disks are large and usually only partly encrypted — the fiscal XML files are small and are best recovered from backups.

The first 24 hours after ransomware in Brazil

  1. 1

Keep the evidence and the encrypted files

Disconnect affected machines from the network but do not wipe, reinstall or run decryptors found online. Keep the ransom note, the encrypted files and the backup storage exactly as they are — recovery and any investigation start from them.

  2. 2

    Check LGPD duties

If personal data is affected, Brazil's LGPD (Law No. 13,709/2018) and the ANPD's incident regulation require the ANPD and the people affected to be informed within a short deadline (three working days under the 2024 regulation). CERT.br receives incident notifications. Confirm with your legal advisers.

  3. 3

    Upload, don't ship

Shipping drives out of Brazil is slow and needs customs paperwork, so almost all Brazilian cases are handled by uploading copies of the encrypted files to us over an encrypted channel.

How a case from Brazil works

1. Remote assessment

Send us the ransom note and a few encrypted files. We identify the ransomware and measure how the files were encrypted — often within hours.

2. Files or media to our lab

Copies of the encrypted databases, virtual disks or backups are uploaded over an encrypted channel, or the drives are shipped to our lab in Dharmapuri, India. Originals are only ever read.

3. Recovery and validation

We recover what the encryption left intact and check it before handing it back, reporting plainly what could not be recovered.

Working with us from Brazil

Most cases never need anything shipped: copies of the encrypted databases, virtual disks or backup files are uploaded over an encrypted channel, or we work in a remote session on a machine you control. Shipping drives out of Brazil is slow and needs customs paperwork, so we only ask for media when the encrypted copies cannot be uploaded. Our standard hours, Monday to Friday 9:00–18:00 IST, are about 00:30 to 09:30 Brasília time (UTC−3), so cases sent in your evening are often assessed by your next morning. Emergency requests are answered 24/7 through the emergency form.

Service coverage

Why encrypted does not always mean lost

To finish quickly, most modern ransomware encrypts only parts of large files — the start, or chunks at intervals. Databases, virtual disks and backup files therefore often keep most of their real content. Some of our measured cases:

We have solved 656+ ransomware and data recovery cases. Results depend on how each file was encrypted, and we tell you exactly what is recoverable after a free assessment, before you pay anything.

Privacy and reporting rules in Brazil

Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD, Law No. 13,709/2018) is enforced by the ANPD, whose incident regulation requires security incidents that may cause relevant risk or damage to personal data to be communicated to the ANPD and to the people affected. Transfers of personal data abroad have their own LGPD conditions. This is general information, not legal advice: check your obligations with your own advisers early, and tell us about any requirements before data is sent.

What to do after a ransomware attack

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Brazil?

No. AS works from one lab in Dharmapuri, India. Brazilian cases are handled remotely: copies of the encrypted files are uploaded over an encrypted channel, or we work in a remote session on a machine you control.

Does sending data to India comply with the LGPD?

International transfers are allowed under conditions set by the LGPD and the ANPD. Whether a transfer is permitted for your data is a question for your legal advisers; we can sign an NDA and a data processing agreement before anything is sent.

Our ERP database and the Veeam backup were both encrypted. Is there hope?

Usually yes, for a large part of the data. We measure the encryption on the database and backup files and recover the tables, virtual machines or files the ransomware left intact.

Do you work in Portuguese?

Our reports are in English. Many customers write to us in Portuguese and we reply in English; tell us if a Portuguese summary is needed for your management or insurer.

Can a TOTVS Protheus database be recovered after ransomware?

Often in large part. Protheus stores its data in SQL Server or Oracle databases; we recover the tables from the pages or blocks that were not encrypted and report which ones are complete.
