Ransomware in Canada: what gets hit
Municipalities, clinics, engineering firms, manufacturers and accounting practices in Canada generally run a modest virtualised environment — two or three hosts, a SQL Server application, a file server and a backup appliance. Ransomware groups encrypt the virtual disks at hypervisor level, which looks total but usually is not: a virtual disk of several hundred gigabytes is typically encrypted only in part, and the file system and databases inside it can be read around the damage.

Most cases never need anything shipped: copies of the encrypted databases, virtual disks or backup files are uploaded over an encrypted channel, or we work in a remote session on a machine you control. When drives or servers do need lab work, they are sent by international courier from Canada to our lab in Dharmapuri, India. We send the address, the paperwork wording for customs and packing instructions before anything leaves you, and the condition of the media is recorded on arrival.
