Hyper-V Recovery

Hyper-V failures span the host storage, the virtual disk format and the guest file system. AS recovers at each layer from images of the underlying storage, independent of the Hyper-V management stack.

AS VMware Recovery — Recover files from VMware VMDK and Hyper-V VHD/VHDX virtual disks — snapshot chains, broken descriptors and ransomware-damaged disks included.

When you need this

  • VHD or VHDX file corrupted or won't mount
  • Checkpoint (snapshot) or differencing disk chain broken after a failed merge
  • VM deleted from the host or accidentally removed from Hyper-V Manager
  • Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) inaccessible or shows as failed in Failover Cluster Manager
  • Host storage failure beneath the virtual disks (ReFS, Storage Spaces, NTFS)
  • Ransomware encryption of the Hyper-V host or its VHDX files
  • Hyper-V Replica failover left the VM in an inconsistent state

What we do

VHD/VHDX repair

Fixed, dynamic and differencing VHD/VHDX files are read directly and repaired, including reconstructing a differencing chain when a checkpoint merge failed partway through.

Cluster Shared Volume recovery

CSVFS structures are assessed and recovered independently of Failover Cluster Manager, whether the fault is at the CSV layer or the storage beneath it.

Host storage recovery

ReFS, NTFS and Storage Spaces layers beneath the virtual disks are recovered first when the host storage itself has failed.

Guest-level extraction

Files, databases and applications are recovered directly from inside a VHD/VHDX when a full VM restore isn't realistic.

Ransomware cases

A VHDX is exactly the kind of large file many ransomware variants only partially encrypt — fully encrypting a multi-gigabyte virtual disk on every host takes time attackers racing across a network don't want to spend, so often only the header and a portion of the blocks are touched, leaving the rest of the guest's data intact underneath.

Large VHDX virtual disk after a partial-encryption ransomware variant (illustrative example):

File header (first blocks)ENCRYPTED← targeted first
Blocks 1 – 4,000intact← often untouched
Block 4,001ENCRYPTED← every Nth block
Blocks 4,002 – 8,000intact← recoverable
Block 8,001ENCRYPTED← every Nth block
Blocks 8,002 – 50,000intact← recoverable

Example outcome after block-level assessment:

✓ 49,997 of 50,000 blocks readable

Actual recoverable percentage depends on the variant and file — established during assessment, not assumed in advance.

A VHDX is exactly the large-file case many variants skip fully encrypting for speed — often only the header and a portion of blocks are touched, leaving the rest of the guest's data intact underneath.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and scope

We establish what failed, what has been tried, and which data matters most. This shapes a targeted plan rather than a generic one.

  2. Step 2

    Secure imaging and diagnosis

Where possible the source media is imaged before any work, so the original is never altered. Diagnosis then determines the safest recovery method.

  3. Step 3

    Recovery

Data is extracted from the image or source using methods matched to the failure — logical, structural or hardware-level as required.

  4. Step 4

    Verification

Recovered data is checked for integrity and completeness, and a file list is shared so you can confirm what matters is there.

  5. Step 5

    Secure delivery

Verified data is returned through an agreed secure method, with guidance on validation before it goes back into production.

What affects the outcome

We have solved 656+ cases like these. Every case is assessed on its own condition, and we tell you exactly what is recoverable after a free assessment, before you pay anything.

  • Physical condition of the media and the extent of any damage
  • Whether the media has been written to, reformatted or re-initialised since the failure
  • Encryption, corruption or partial overwriting of the data
  • Availability of source data such as images, backups, logs or transaction records
  • Attempts made before assessment (rebuilds, repair tools, repeated reboots)

AS VMware Recovery

Open Hyper-V VHD / VHDX disks and their AVHDX checkpoints directly on a Windows PC, without a Hyper-V host. The free edition opens the disk and its snapshots, runs every scan and previews every file.

Frequently asked questions

A checkpoint merge failed and now the VM won't start. Can this be fixed?

Usually. We analyse the differencing disk chain to identify which files hold valid data and reconstruct a consistent virtual disk from them, rather than assuming the whole chain is lost because the merge failed.

Our Cluster Shared Volume shows as failed in Failover Cluster Manager — is the data gone?

Not necessarily. A CSV failure is often at the cluster/storage layer rather than the data itself. We assess the underlying storage directly before assuming the volume's content is unrecoverable.

Do you need access to the Hyper-V host or Failover Cluster Manager?

No. Recovery works from images of the underlying storage, independent of whether the host or cluster itself is even running.

Ransomware hit our Hyper-V host — is a multi-terabyte VHDX a lost cause?

Not automatically. Many ransomware variants skip fully encrypting very large files for speed, touching only the VHDX's header and some of its blocks. We assess how much of the virtual disk is genuinely untouched before assuming the whole thing is gone.

Is this the same as Hyper-V Replica or Azure Site Recovery?

No — those are Microsoft's own products for planned failover between sites, set up in advance of an incident. We provide after-the-fact recovery of damaged, deleted or ransomware-affected data on your existing Hyper-V storage when no such failover is in place, or when the failover target was also affected.

Do you do VHDX file recovery?

Yes. VHDX file recovery handles virtual disks that will not mount, broken checkpoint (AVHDX) chains and deleted virtual machines. Corrupted VHDX recovery reads the disk's internal tables directly and recovers the file system and databases inside it, including after partial ransomware encryption.
