Ransomware in Bengaluru: what gets hit

Bengaluru's IT services firms, software product companies, startups and global capability centres run heavily virtualised infrastructure: VMware ESXi hosts, SQL Server and other databases, NAS storage and Veeam backups. That is exactly what modern ransomware goes after — the hypervisor, the database servers and the backup repository in one intrusion. Large files such as VMDKs, MDFs and VBKs are often only partly encrypted, which is where recovery comes from.

How a case from Bengaluru works

1. Remote assessment

Send us the ransom note and a few encrypted files. We identify the ransomware and measure how the files were encrypted — often within hours.

2. Files or media to our lab

Copies of the encrypted databases, virtual disks or backups — or the drives themselves — come to our lab in Dharmapuri. Originals are only ever read.

3. Recovery and validation

We recover what the encryption left intact and check it before handing it back, reporting plainly what could not be recovered.

Getting to our lab from Bengaluru

Bengaluru is the closest major city to our lab. Media can be brought to Dharmapuri by road along NH44 through Hosur and Krishnagiri — about 140 km, roughly three hours — or sent by courier, usually arriving the next day. Dharmapuri also has a railway station on the Bengaluru – Salem line. Visits and drop-offs are by appointment so that someone is ready to receive the media and record its condition.

Why encrypted does not always mean lost

To finish quickly, most modern ransomware encrypts only parts of large files — the start, or chunks at intervals. Databases, virtual disks and backup files therefore often keep most of their real content. Some of our measured cases:

We have solved 656+ ransomware and data recovery cases. Results depend on how each file was encrypted, and we tell you exactly what is recoverable after a free assessment, before you pay anything.

Reporting rules in India

CERT-In's April 2022 directions require organisations to report cyber incidents, including ransomware, to CERT-In within six hours of noticing them. If personal data is affected, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 also requires the breach to be reported to the Data Protection Board and to the people affected. This is general information, not legal advice — check your obligations early, because the clock starts when the incident is noticed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you come to our office in Bengaluru?

On-site help is possible where it makes sense, and Bengaluru is close to our lab. In most ransomware cases, though, the faster route is a remote assessment followed by copies of the affected files being sent to us. We will tell you which applies after the first call.

How fast can you start?

The assessment usually starts the same day you contact us, remotely. Emergency requests are answered 24/7 through the emergency form.

Our VMware hosts and Veeam backups were both encrypted. Is there any hope?

Often, yes. Ransomware commonly encrypts only parts of large VMDK and VBK files; the rest of the data is still there. We measure exactly how each file was encrypted before saying what is recoverable.
