Ransomware in Kolkata: what gets hit
Kolkata's trading houses, distributors, tea and jute companies, hospitals, banks' back offices and IT companies in Salt Lake and New Town keep their accounts and operations in SQL Server, Tally, Busy and Marg, often on a single server with the backup in the same office. Ransomware that reaches that server usually reaches the backup too. Large database and virtual disk files are often only partly encrypted, so a lot can usually be recovered.
How a case from Kolkata works
1. Remote assessment
Send us the ransom note and a few encrypted files. We identify the ransomware and measure how the files were encrypted — often within hours.
2. Files or media to our lab
Copies of the encrypted databases, virtual disks or backups — or the drives themselves — come to our lab in Dharmapuri. Originals are only ever read.
3. Recovery and validation
We recover what the encryption left intact and check it before handing it back, reporting plainly what could not be recovered.
Getting to our lab from Kolkata
Kolkata is about 1,900 km from our lab in Dharmapuri, so cases are handled remotely: encrypted files are transferred over an encrypted channel, or drives are sent by air courier, usually arriving within one to two days. For an in-person handover, fly to Bengaluru; Dharmapuri is about three hours from there by road. Visits are by appointment.
Why encrypted does not always mean lost
To finish quickly, most modern ransomware encrypts only parts of large files — the start, or chunks at intervals. Databases, virtual disks and backup files therefore often keep most of their real content. Some of our measured cases:
We have solved 656+ ransomware and data recovery cases. Results depend on how each file was encrypted, and we tell you exactly what is recoverable after a free assessment, before you pay anything.
Reporting rules in India
CERT-In's April 2022 directions require organisations to report cyber incidents, including ransomware, to CERT-In within six hours of noticing them. If personal data is affected, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 also requires the breach to be reported to the Data Protection Board and to the people affected. This is general information, not legal advice — check your obligations early, because the clock starts when the incident is noticed.

Frequently asked questions
Can you help us from Tamil Nadu?
Yes. Recovery works from copies of the encrypted files, so distance does not slow it down: we assess remotely the same day and the files are transferred or couriered to our lab.
Should we report the attack?
CERT-In's directions require cyber incidents, including ransomware, to be reported within six hours of noticing them, and the DPDP Act applies if personal data is affected. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you sign an NDA?
