Space Bears is known for a leak site with a polished "corporate" look and stock photography. The consultancy S-RM first identified it in April 2024, when an operator of Faust, one of the affiliate teams of the Phobos ransomware-as-a-service, used it to extort a victim. ransomware.live counts about 160 victim claims, with new posts in October 2026. Its claims are not always confirmed: Atos publicly denied a Space Bears claim against it.

Data theft, encryption, or both

Reporting describes Space Bears victims who had data stolen and others whose systems were also encrypted. Entry is typically through exposed Remote Desktop (RDP) and phishing, the classic Phobos pattern. If files were encrypted, the extension in the file names tells which Phobos variant was used, and some Phobos variants are covered by the free decryptor published in 2025.

Space Bears ransomware data recovery: what we recover

We identify the variant from the ransom note and file names, and when no key is available we recover SQL Server and Oracle databases, Tally and other ERP data, virtual disks and backups from the parts the encryptor did not reach. Keep the encrypted files and contact us for a free assessment. No data, no charge.

Veeam backups, SQL Server or Oracle databases encrypted by Space Bears?

Ransomware groups go after the backup repository first. A .vbk or .vib file renamed by the ransomware is often not lost: large backup files are usually only partly encrypted, and the intact blocks can be verified and rebuilt into the virtual disks. The same holds for SQL Server MDF and BAK files and for Oracle datafiles and Data Pump exports: the rows the ransomware did not reach can be read directly. In real cases we rebuilt a 466 GB server disk from a 43 GB Akira-encrypted VBK, and recovered 98.8% of the rows from LockBit-encrypted SQL Server backups.
