Dire Wolf was first documented in May 2025. Unlike the large affiliate programmes, it is run by a tight core team, and its leak site had listed 135 victims by late September 2026 — 20 of them in the previous 30 days (ransomware.live). The US has the most victims, but Malaysia and Thailand come next and India has been hit too: an unusual weight on Asia for a group of this size.

How it works

The encryptor is written in Go and uses Curve25519 key exchange with ChaCha20 file encryption — a modern, fast combination with no known weakness that would allow decryption without the attackers' key. Reported ransom demands run up to $500,000, and the group uses double extortion: data is copied out before encryption and published if the victim does not pay. Victims span healthcare, professional services, technology and manufacturing.

What this means for recovery

With sound cryptography, recovery comes from what the attack did not reach or did not finish: backup repositories that were not reachable, snapshots on storage the malware could not touch, and large files — databases and virtual disks especially — that were only partly processed. Whether that last route is open is checked file by file, not assumed.

Every one of those options depends on the affected storage being imaged before anything is rebuilt, reinstalled or "cleaned". That first step is what keeps the rest possible.

Veeam backups, SQL Server or Oracle databases encrypted by Dire Wolf?

Ransomware groups go after the backup repository first. A .vbk or .vib file renamed by the ransomware is often not lost: large backup files are usually only partly encrypted, and the intact blocks can be verified and rebuilt into the virtual disks. The same holds for SQL Server MDF and BAK files and for Oracle datafiles and Data Pump exports: the rows the ransomware did not reach can be read directly. In real cases we rebuilt a 466 GB server disk from a 43 GB Akira-encrypted VBK, and recovered 98.8% of the rows from LockBit-encrypted SQL Server backups.
