Lynx Ransomware Recovery: What's Recoverable
Lynx first appeared in July 2024 and is widely assessed as a rebrand or direct successor of INC Ransom's codebase rather than a ground-up rewrite, repackaged under new branding with its own ransomware-as-a-service affiliate program.
Shared lineage, familiar encryption
Lynx encrypts file content with AES-128 in CTR mode, using Curve25519 Donna for key exchange, and appends a .lynx extension — an encryption approach consistent with the codebase it's derived from rather than a new implementation.
What this means for recovery
Because Lynx shares its lineage with INC Ransom, incidents attributed to either name can behave similarly at the file level, and the same assessment questions apply to both. As with any AES/CTR-mode ransomware, whether partial recovery is realistic comes down to the specific keystream and per-file structure in the affected files — something an assessment establishes directly rather than assuming either way from the family name alone.
Veeam backups, SQL Server or Oracle databases encrypted by Lynx?
Ransomware groups go after the backup repository first. A .vbk or .vib file renamed by the ransomware is often not lost: large backup files are usually only partly encrypted, and the intact blocks can be verified and rebuilt into the virtual disks. The same holds for SQL Server MDF and BAK files and for Oracle datafiles and Data Pump exports: the rows the ransomware did not reach can be read directly. In real cases we rebuilt a 466 GB server disk from a 43 GB Akira-encrypted VBK, and recovered 98.8% of the rows from LockBit-encrypted SQL Server backups.
