Embargo Ransomware Recovery: Rust Toolkit That Disables Security Tools
Embargo has been active since 2024 and is still posting victims in 2026 on ransomware.live. ESET's research describes its toolkit, written in Rust: a loader ESET named MDeployer and an EDR killer named MS4Killer. MS4Killer is compiled for each victim to target the specific security products found there, and uses a vulnerable signed driver (the technique known as BYOVD) to terminate them. Rust also lets Embargo target both Windows and Linux.
Why security tools didn't stop it
Because MS4Killer runs before the encryptor and keeps killing security processes in a loop, many Embargo victims find their antivirus or EDR showed nothing until files were already encrypted. That is a lesson for prevention, but for recovery the question is only what state the encrypted files are in.
What we recover in Embargo cases
We examine the encrypted SQL Server and Oracle databases, VMware and Hyper-V virtual disks, Veeam backups and file servers directly and recover what the encryptor did not reach. Large files are often only partly encrypted. We have solved many cases like this.
Do not delete encrypted files or wipe the servers. Keep a copy and contact us for a free assessment. No data, no charge.
Veeam backups, SQL Server or Oracle databases encrypted by Embargo?
Ransomware groups go after the backup repository first. A .vbk or .vib file renamed by the ransomware is often not lost: large backup files are usually only partly encrypted, and the intact blocks can be verified and rebuilt into the virtual disks. The same holds for SQL Server MDF and BAK files and for Oracle datafiles and Data Pump exports: the rows the ransomware did not reach can be read directly. In real cases we rebuilt a 466 GB server disk from a 43 GB Akira-encrypted VBK, and recovered 98.8% of the rows from LockBit-encrypted SQL Server backups.
