Hard Drive Clicking or Not Detected? What to Do First
A hard drive that clicks, grinds, beeps, will not spin up, or does not show up in the system usually has a physical or firmware fault, and not a simple file problem. Recovery software cannot help with those, because the drive cannot be read reliably in the first place. What matters most at this stage is limiting further damage.
Power it off and stop trying
If a drive is clicking or struggling, switch it off. Each time it is powered on, a damaged read head or a damaged surface can do more harm, and repeated attempts can turn a recoverable drive into one that is not. Resist the urge to try it in a different computer several times to see whether it works.
Check the simple things once
It is reasonable to check, once, that the cable, the port and the power supply are not the problem: a different cable or port, or an external enclosure with its own power. If the drive is still not detected, or it clicks again, stop. A drive that is detected but very slow, freezes the system, or reports a size of zero is also showing signs of a fault, and should be treated with care.
What not to do
Do not run CHKDSK, disk repair tools or recovery software scans on a drive that is clicking or struggling, because they read the whole surface repeatedly and write to the disk. Do not open the drive: the platters need a clean environment, and opening it in ordinary air can contaminate them. Putting a drive in a freezer is a myth that can cause condensation damage. Replacing the circuit board with one from a similar drive often does not work on modern drives, because the board holds adaptive data unique to each drive.
Drives that work, but with errors
If the drive is detected and readable, but throws errors or is slow, the best step is to copy the important data off it once, and then stop. An imaging tool that handles bad sectors gracefully is better than a normal file copy, because it reads the healthy areas first and comes back to the difficult ones later. SMART data can also be read, and a rising count of reallocated or pending sectors is a warning sign.
Other causes
Not every undetected drive is mechanical. Electrical faults, power surges and firmware problems can also stop a drive from being detected, and they need different handling from a head or surface fault. Which of these it is cannot be decided by trial and error at the keyboard, which is another reason not to keep trying.
When to get help
For a drive that clicks, will not spin, or is not detected, recovery usually needs specialist equipment and a clean environment. Whether the data can be recovered depends on the fault and on how much further damage has been done, and we tell you exactly what is recoverable after a free assessment. Every extra power-on reduces the chances.
