MetaEncryptor was first observed in mid-2023 and is still active: its leak site had listed 55 victims by late September 2026, 17 of them in the previous 30 days (ransomware.live) — a sharp rise for a group that had posted slowly until now. It targets medium-to-large companies, most often in manufacturing, professional services including legal, technology, logistics and finance, in the US, UK, Europe and Southeast Asia.

How it works

Files are encrypted with AES-256 and the keys protected with RSA-2048, a standard hybrid scheme with no practical way to recover keys without the attackers. Data is copied out first, so victims face both encryption and the threat of publication.

What this means for recovery

Recovery depends on what the attack did not reach or did not finish: offline or immutable backups, storage snapshots, and files that were only partly processed. Databases and virtual disks are worth assessing individually — large files are where partial encryption is most common, and partly encrypted database files can sometimes be rebuilt from their intact pages.

Veeam backups, SQL Server or Oracle databases encrypted by MetaEncryptor?

Ransomware groups go after the backup repository first. A .vbk or .vib file renamed by the ransomware is often not lost: large backup files are usually only partly encrypted, and the intact blocks can be verified and rebuilt into the virtual disks. The same holds for SQL Server MDF and BAK files and for Oracle datafiles and Data Pump exports: the rows the ransomware did not reach can be read directly. In real cases we rebuilt a 466 GB server disk from a 43 GB Akira-encrypted VBK, and recovered 98.8% of the rows from LockBit-encrypted SQL Server backups.
